The comeback of the Eastern Oyster
We grow our own oysters! At Wild Country Seafood we believe it is important to create a sustainable fishery to help protect and enhance our Chesapeake bay. The end goal is to reduce need for wild stocks, create new and viable oyster bars(reefs), and improve water quality.
It all starts with shells & seed
Picture below is our re-seeding process. Two million spat (baby oysters) are set upon 300 bushels of recycled oyster shells, then moments later loaded on our vessel to be planted on our Private oyster bar in the Rhode River.
Oyster spat prefer an calcium based substrate to adhere/anchor to. Once attached, the tiny bivalve begins to grow. One oyster shell can produce 5 to 10 new animals.
All seperate animals growing upon the same shell, unique in their own right. It takes 2 to 3 years to produce a market size patty fatty.
Oyster Shell recycling
Every oyster shell recycled with us is replanted on our bar! Oyster farming is a regenerative and sustainable industry. Oyster shells equal more substrate for oyster spat to attach too, the end result? More oysters in our rivers and bay that our providing habitat, water filtration, and of course delicious seafood.
